Reberb 9. Reading as a child.

Today’s Reverb Broads subject is: 12/9/2011 What was your favorite children’s book? Niki
I don’t know the answer to this question! I read a lot as a kid and my mom encouraged my reading by buying books that were way too advanced for me, but I read them anyway. For example, I read Catcher in the Rye when I was 1o. Yep. I didn’t really get it, but I remember that I enjoyed it.
I’m not sure how old I was when I started reading Judy Blume books, but I loved them with my whole heart and I read them over and over and over. Maybe those were my favorites?
Gah! I don’t know!

I did the same thing, except behind my mom’s back. I remember reading Jaws at 11 and knowing I probably shouldn’t be reading it when I across the f-word and a very racy sex scene. It was my favorite until my brother ratted me out about the f-word and my mom confiscated the book.
Judy Blume was great, but I always felt so scandalous, reading her books.
My favorite children’s book was The Thirteen Clocks, by James Thurber. I still reread it occasionally.
In the fourth grade I fell into the novels of one Walt Morey, who wrote books in the genre, “lonely boy in Alaska is befriended by bear/wolf/wolverine/hoot owl/etc.” I have no idea why they spoke to my very suburban little heart, but they surely did.
